Monday At The Mid-South
"Independence Day Comes Early"
Monday Night 7/02/92
Mid-South Coliseum
Memphis, Tenesee
Huge celebration here as we kick things off with a local fan singing "God Bless America". This goes off without a hitch of course.
A lot of fun in our opening bout as UWF stars the Fabulous Freebirds:Terry Gordy & Michael "P.S."Hayes bring Bad Street to the USWA as they square off against Billy Joe Travis & Bodyguard Rod. Fun interaction between Gordy & Rod here, a true highlight. Hayes seems to be having the time of his life in there. DDT finishes Travis off as Gordy keeps Rod at bay giving the birds the victory at 5:56. The birds do some strutting, Hayes does some microphone work thanking the crowd and well Travis sheds a few tears.
Our next bout see's Wolfie D go one on one with the
Spellbinder. As it was set up on TV, New Jack & his thugs are barred from the building so this is a fair fight. Binder does the whole I'm not selling a darn thing routine, but Wolfie does get some offense in due to some eye pokes and what not. In the end however the big man is able to score with a spinwheel kick and put Wolfie away at8:51.
8 Man Tag Team Action follows with the Dangerous Alliance duo of Greg"the Hammer" Valentine & "Terrific" Terry Taylor team with the ever mysterious Blackhearts (Apocalypse & Destruction) w/ Paul E. Dangerously & Daryl Van Horne battled the foursome of the Bruise Brothers (Don & Ron Harris), "Superstar" Bill Dundee & Marcus Alexander Bagwell. Fun little bout here, some for shadowing to revist down the road as Valentine & Taylor bump like crazy for the Bruise Brothers. Finish see's Bagwell roll up Valentine with a rolling reverse cradle only for Taylor to sneak in and score with the Five Arm prompting Valentine to reverse the pin and get the win for his team at 16:01.
Post Match- Taylor & Valentine get out of there. And the Bruise Brothers & Blackhearts get to brawling.... HERE COMES...
DOOMSDAY! Bagwell & Dundee help the Bruise Brothers pitch the Blackhearts out of the ring, BUT DOOMSDAY DOES NOT ENTER the ring, simply makes a cut throat motion in the Brothers direction and exits to the back, with the Blackhearts & Van Horne tailing behind him.
Our first of four big title matches follows as Brian Christopher puts the USWA Jr. Heavyweight Championship on the line against"Simply Irresistible" Jeff Jarrett. Lots of heat for this one, as both men played their roles quite perfectly. We get a ref bump and Jarrett doesn't notice it, instead looks to finish with the second rope dropkick but we've got no official here. Brian at this point readies a foreign object! Here we go, it's BLOCKED by Jarrett! Jarrett grabs hold of the weapon and wraps it around his fist... WHAMO! Official is up... Jarrett covers... and we've got a new USWA Jr. Heavyweight Champion at 21:11!
Post Match- The official raises Jarrett's hand... see's the object... uh-oh... Jarrett's trying to explain what happened, but to no avail as Paul Neighbors calls for the bell again, handing the title back to a down and out Brian Christopher... official result: due to the foreign object the official has modified his decession, [color=RedBrian Christopher is STILL the USWA Jr. Heavyweight Champion![/color] Christopher looks defeated but can do nothing but smile, BUT LOOK AT THIS Jarrett with a huge uppercut sends him up and over the top rope! Jarrett celebrates in the ring, I'd imagine this one is FAR from over.
Intermission
During intermission we're told to stay tuned to USWA Championship Wrestling as big news in on the horizon fans!
More huge title match action follows as the NWA Worlds Tag Team Championships are on the line as the Steiners (Rick & Scott Steiner) defend the gold against USWA Tag Team Champions: The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers). Crowd is heavily in the Fantastics corners here. Steiners play subtle heels throughout, slowly building to the point where well Scotty has some "words" with the fans at ringside. Finish see's Rick "accidently" stand up on Fulton as he tries a leap frog catching him with a headbutt between the belt. Rick is slow to cover, ethical issues and all, but Scotty tags himself in drops an elbow and yeah picks up the somewhat tainted victory to retain at an impressive27:41.
Post Match- Fantastics want a hand shake, Rick looks ready to give it to 'em... BUT Scotty flips them off and yeah crowd doesn't like this one bit. Awesome match though. Scotty and Rick make an exit with Scotty jarring with the fans the entire time.
The USWA Heavyweight Championship is on the line as Terry Funkdefends against former Champion: "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert w/Paul E. Dangerously. . With a tough act to follow, these two put on a traditional southern style 'rasslin' match that resembles more of a brawl than anything else. Crowd was into it for sure. Both men are busted open in the early going. Funk keeps trying for the spinning toe hold, but Eddie keeps weaseling away. Finish see's GILBERT bust out a spinning toe hold, leading to him being caught in a small package for two! Once he pops up he's again surprised by a Funk kick to the gut and a DDT, and the Funker RETAINS at 25:45.
Post Match- Funker does the over the top baby face celebration in the crowd, as Gilbert again recovers to throw a hissy fit inside the ring.
Grudge tag team action follows as "Boston Bad Boy" Tony Rumble leads his Pitbulls (Rex & Spike) out on chains to face off against Memphis' own Jerry "the King" Lawler & the "Suicide Blonde" Chris Candido. The Bulls bring their power game and are able to beat the heck out of Lawler & Candido in the early going. But with the crowd behind them the duo is able to rally back from behind. It's not long before Rex is put away with a Lawler second rope fist drop at just
7:12.
Post Match- As Rumble checks on his men, the King grabs him by the back of the head... PILEDRIVER for Rumble... NO Candido stops him? Candido wants to piledrive Rumble! Lawler let's him! PILEDRIVER FOR RUMBLE! A feel good moment in the Coliseum fans!
Main Event time, and by god if it isn't a classic! NWA World's Championship is on the line as Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat defends against "Universal Heartthrob" Austin Idol of the Dangerous Alliance w/Paul EDangerously. . Awesome freaking bout, drawing a LOT from old Ricky Steamboat/Ric Flair spots throughout. Some minor blood loss, good long stretches of mat rasslin, southern brawling, the works. We're nearing the freaking 60 minute mark, as Steamboat scores with a crossbody block, Idol rolls through for a two count but the bell sounds signalling an impressive 60 minute time limit draw! Austin Idol has still not been defeated by Ricky Steamboat, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY Austin Idol has NOT won the NWA World's Championship! Awesome match, great way to end the show!
