Live from The Independence Arena

From ringside ...
Tony Schiavone: From the Independence Arena in Charlotte, North Caroline, home of The Nature Boy Ric Flair, and tonight, home of WCW, this is Monday Nitro live on TNT! Hello wrestling fans, I'm Tony Schiavone here at ringside along with The Living Legend Larry Zbyszko, and tonight, what a lineup of action we have in store for you with Halloween Havoc approaching in only 2 weeks time. Later on in hour #2, Cactus Jack to take on the WCW champion Big Van Vader, The Nasty Boys and The Hollywood Blonds look to settle their rivalry in a Nastyville Street Fight, and The Natural Dustin Rhodes to take on Sid Vicious. Here in hour #1 though, coming off of last week's confrontation, a rematch from 2 weeks ago as The Gentleman Chris Adams takes on Brad Armstrong.
Larry Zbyszko: And these 2 really don't like each other. How simple the rivlary in wrestling grows, like a tree blossoming its first leaf in spring after the autumn deception, just when you think something's gone, it's back. We hadn't seen Chris Adams here in years and Brad Armstrong seemed to be on the brink of obscurity a couple months back, but this match tonight has a lot of importance to it. It's not only about who can win, but also who can survive.
Tony Schiavone: That match, plus a non title match with the WCW Tag Team champions Beautiful Bobby Eaton and Chris Benoit to take on former champion Arn Anderson and not Ric Flair, but rather parterning with Shane Douglas.
Larry Zbyszko: And we have seen Douglas take his lumps since returning here to WCW. A Horseman in training, and maybe the pressure is too much. Maybe it's too much for somebody of his stature. Tonight he has a chance at some redemption because out steps Ric Flair to focus on his rivalry with Barry Windham, opens a big door for Douglas. If him and Anderson win here tonight, we could be looking at the next Tag Team champions.
Tony Schiavone: And speaking of Barry Windham, The Lone Wolf is in action as well. Main event later here in hour #1 as he takes on 2 Cold Scorpio. That 1 should be something to see if judging from their past encounters. But speaking of Barry Windham ...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Lone Wolf Barry Windham heads to the ring to open up WCW Nitro. The commentators make it clear his match is later, wondering what this is all about. He has a paper in hand, perhaps a contract of some sort as he enters the ring and requests a mic to address the audience.
Barry Windham: Charlotte, North Carolina (the fans cheer). I really don't know if that's something to be proud of, and maybe instead of cheering, you should all be in awe that you are getting the chance to look at a great wrestler like myself. Unlike your local boy hero Ric Flair (the fans cheer again interrupting him a second time). Please. Unlike Ric Flair, I'll actually be taking to this ring here tonight for all you fans, even if you don't deserve it. But that's because I'm better than Flair. I'm a better man than Flair, and I always have been. He knows it, and Halloween Havoc, everybody else will know it too. But that's not why I'm out here right now. The reason I'm out here is to talk about this.
Windham holds up the paper as the commentators discuss what it could be.
Tony Schiavone: What is that?
Larry Zbyszko: Looks like some sort of piece of paper.
Tony Schiavone: I can see a signature on it from here.
Larry Zbyszko: A contract maybe?
After that Einstein level exchange, back to Windham to address what it is.
Barry Windham: What I have right here is to make sure that what happens last week doesn't happen again. I had a match with Shane Douglas and Ric Flair came out, interfering in my match, and let's face it. He's a threat to my safety and to my well being. With actions like that, I might not survive until Halloween Havoc. I can't focus on 2 Cold Scorpio tonight without having something like this in place to make sure that Ric Flair stays away from the ring. This, and Mr. Camera man, come in real close on this so he knows I'm not bluffing here, this is a temporary restraining order that says Ric Flair has to stay 50 feet away from me at all times. If he gets any closer, that's it. He gets arrested, the Halloween Havoc match is off, but not because of me. It'll be because of your hero. Deep down inside, he's probably scared of me, so in some ways, this can be seen as an out for him. If you're scared Flair, just attack me. Just do it. And ...
WCW commissioner J.J. Dillon heads down to the ring.
Barry Windham: Oh, here we go. Here we go! What is this? Finally have time for me huh? You finally have time for me? After weeks of ignoring me. You let it get to this J.J. You let it escalate to this.
Dillon enters the ring and requests the document.
Barry Windham: Yeah, you look that over. Look at what you've done. You're supposed to be the commissioner, meanwhile you're letting this lunatic run the asylum. This isn't 1987 J.J. This isn't Ric Flair, selling out America against Dusty Rhodes while you sit in the corner and watch. This is 1993 and your job is the commissioner of WCW, not the manager of Ric Flair. Not the manager of some second rate, over the hill Barry Windham wannabe. You look at that J.J. because this is your fault for letting Flair run rampant while you're too busy with Hulk Hogan and Sting and failing to make that happen. Now you risk robbing these fans of this match too. You're just as responsible as Flair is for this.
J.J. Dillon: Are you about finished yet?
Barry Windham: I'll finish when I say I'm finished J.J. You wanna speak, tell all these fans what I already told them. That restraining order is the real thing. No Ric Flair tonight in his home town. Tell them this is your fault.
J.J. Dillon: Well you are correct in that this is a restraining order. But if you want to throw blame around, you brought last week onto yourself. You interfered in Ric's match the week before Barry, and you didn't see him getting a restraining order. He came back at you like a man. He wants to settle this at Halloween Havoc, not a court room. We've got enough legal mumbo jumbo going around WCW right now, too much that we shouldn't have to worry about this nonsense.
Barry Windham: Ric, Barry, don't talk to me like we're friends. You address me, you address me with respect. You call me Mr. Windham when you talk to me. And don't give the impression that I don't want this to go down at Halloween Havoc. You know J.J. that-
J.J. Dillon: Mr. Dillon that should be.
Barry Windham: You're lucky I even address you as anything because you're nothing but Ric Flair's shoeshine boy out here. The reality here is that you aren't a fair commissioner. You give Flair the chance to wrestle Vader back in August as reparations for 2 years ago because he never lost the title. Flair doesn't get the job done, but what do you do? You give him another chance. He doesn't get the job done again. Meanwhile I'm out there bringing gold to WCW, something nobody's ever done before me. I go out and win a high stakes international championship recognized the world over, and what do I get? A trip to Japan and a title defense the minute I step off the plane. Real classy J.J. Real classy. Later tonight, I'm telling you, do your job. If Ric Flair lays a hand on me tonight, this piece of paper here says he gets arrested, and Halloween Havoc is out. Don't rob these fans of the chance to see Flair and me at the PPV, and don't rob them of the match with me and Scorpio.
J.J. Dillon: You know for once, we agree. See, I want to see that match as much as any fan out there. I want to see Ric Flair and Barry Windham, so you can be sure that-
Fans pop huge as Flair walks out of the entrance way, heading towards the ring.
J.J. Dillon: Ric! Ric, hold on here! Hold on! Don't do it.
Dillon exits the ring and starts talking Flair out of getting in there. Within seconds, Doug Dellinger and several members of security have swarmed Flair to keep him back.
Barry Windham: What is this J.J.? 50 feet. I want 50 feet between us. That is not 50 feet.
Flair flips Windham off from the outside, unable to get any closer.
Barry Windham: Yeah you're lucky all this security is here. I got this restraining order not only for my protection, but yours too. Now I can't kick your rear all over your own hometown like it should be. If it were up to me, we'd be doing this tonight so I could embarrass you right here in Charlotte.
Flair continues trying to get through without any luck. Windham puts down the mic and steps outside the ring. With security holding Flair back, Windham walks by laughing. He knows he has Flair held off until the PPV, but maybe a mistake because this will only enrage Flair that much more for when the time comes. It is Scorpio vs Windham though later on tonight, Flair unable to do anything really here in his own hometown.
-- First commercial break --
Tony Schiavone: Alright, welcome back. What a hot start to the night here in Charlotte. Just moments ago, Barry Windham revealing a restraining order placed upon Ric Flair. Some might call it a cowardly act, others maybe a strategic move. What do you think of it Legend?
Larry Zbyszko: I think this is pro wrestling. I think the action should take place inside the ring. When legalities get involved, it's 1 thing to keep a liar like that Brother Brutus piece of garbage out of the way after he shysters his way into a contract, but it's another to keep a man that you intend to fight in 2 weeks time away from you. This to me shows that Barry Windham is scared of Flair, and he's scared of what could happen at Halloween Havoc.
Tony Schiavone: Of course it could also just be what he says. He has a match tonight with 2 Cold Scorpio, not wanting a repeat of last week's show when his match with Shane Douglas was interrupted by an irate Nature Boy coming out to get his hands on him.
Larry Zbyszko: Well whether it's this week or next or Halloween Havoc, it's going to happen anyway. You make your bed, and now you're going to have to go to sleep in it. Perhaps for good.
Coming into shot are the U.S. champion Ice Train and a rare appearance by the man that trained him, Thunderbolt Patterson (who despite the picture, looks older than that, but not surprisingly little exists from his 1993 WCW managerial run).
Tony Schiavone: Alright, joining is right now is Ice Train, and a man that is certainly no stranger to the fans in this area, all up and down the east coast and throughout the Mid Atlantic region, Thunderbolt Patterson. Pleasure to have you both here.
Thunderbolt Patterson: And I gotta tell ya something out here, this man right here? You have no idea how proud I am of what he's accomplished in such a short time in this here ring. The United States champion already, and it's only the beginning for him my brother. This is only the start, because I see big things coming his way in the very near future. I'm talking Ron Simmons, Halloween Havoc, and let me tell you something right now about that there match. This man made the challenge and you may have respect for that man, but I had it up to here with him, ohhhhhh daddy! He is not the man you think he is Train. I'm telling ya, I've watched him, you gonna have to be ready for anything and everything with that son, I'm telling ya that.
Ice Train: I got no illusions about this match. I just want to use it as my chance to prove to everybody out here, prove to WCW, that I am for real! You understand? This is about something I gotta go out there and do. Prove to myself. Ron Simmons, first black man to hold that WCW title. He's been where men like you and me have only dreamed of, but now I know! I know that it's possible that I can someday too get to the top.
Thunderbolt Patterson: But don't let that blind you man! There's a difference between you and Ron Simmons, and it's in here. It's called heart. It's called intensity! Determination! That man is a win at all costs, win by any means necessary mentality. Oh sure, he told those Harlem Heat, stay away. Stay back. But can you really trust this man? You think he ain't playing you for a fool out here? All I'm gonna say is don't let your guard down. You came into WCW with something that I haven't seen in a long time. You wanna talk history and Ron Simmons, history already been made out here! You undefeated! You the WCW Strongest Arm champion! You the U.S. champion! Ron Simmons ain't nothing to you but a name and that's all he should be. I don't want you going in there thinking you wrestling the man that won the WCW title because that's not who's coming to the dance, no it's not. Who is coming is a man that will cheat to win. He'll do anything he can, and you gotta be ready for it Train. You gotta be ready!
Ice Train: Oh I'mma be ready at the Halloween Havoc. You and me, we both know that I didn't get this U.S. title by accident. But it don't mean nothing if I'm not facing the best that WCW has to offer. This ain't about the Harlem Heat, it's about Ron Simmons. And you best believe that if they wanna come down and play dirty dog, we gonn' play. Ain't nobody out there, nobody! He ain't gonn' stop the Ice Train, CHOO! CHOO!
Thunderbolt Patterson: Now that's what I'm talking about! That's what I'm saying!
Tony Schiavone: Alright, and in 2 weeks time it will be Ice Train and Ron Simmons at Halloween Havoc, but before that, Ice Train will be in action this weekend on WCW Saturday Night over on TBS. Right now though, up to the ring with David Penzer as he's standing by to introduce the opening match.

Non title action kicks off the opening match here. 2 weeks ago on Nitro, the team of Bobby Eaton and Chris Benoit surprised the wrestling world when they were able to capture the Tag Team title from Ric Flair and Arn Anderson with help both from Barry Windham, and also their new manager Scotty Flamingo. Tonight's challenge comes not from Flair and Anderson, but instead Anderson and Horseman in training Shane Douglas. It has been a rough couple of weeks for Douglas, tonight being a chance for some redemption. A win tonight combined with Anderson being the recent former co holder, and it would have to make a case for them to get the next title shot. Anderson of course is already in line for a TV title match after defeating Lord Steven Regal last night in a non title match, which Larry Zbyszko says he can not wait to see. Some shaky team work between Anderson and Douglas when they have the advantage sees Anderson requesting a tag, but Douglas wanting to keep going. He ends up suffering for it when the momentum changes thanks to a ref distraction from Flamingo on the outside. A critical mistake potentially as the champions isolate Douglas, but before he can be put away, he manages to reverse a Dragon Suplex from Benoit into a Belly to Belly Suplex. With both men down, Eaton first gets the tag followed by Anderson taking the hot tag and cleaning house. Benoit comes back for some and even Flamingo gets some too when he gets up to the ring apron. Anderson catches Eaton with a spinning spinebuster slam and gets a cover, but Benoit manages to break it up before a 3 can be administered. The referee gets Benoit out as Douglas takes a tag back in, but instead of finishing off Eaton, runs over and hits Benoit. The referee steps between them and Eaton comes from behind before tagging Benoit and a 5 count to double team. Anderson enters and the referee is now distracted by trying to get him out. Benoit then lifts Douglas into position as Eaton goes out for the knee drop from the top. Eaton comes off, but Douglas manages to lift himself up causing Eaton to miss, hooks Benoit in a front facelock, taking him down and over into a cover. The referee counts, and Douglas pins Benoit! A big non title win here, and the champions immediately get to the outside to regroup with Flamingo and their title belts. Anderson and Douglas get a big non title win, but the commentators wonder now, a victory over Regal, this victory, what title does Anderson go after?
-- Second commercial break --
Tony Schiavone: Alright, welcome back. Just before the break, Arn Anderson and Shane Douglas with a big non title win over the Tag Team champions Bobby Eaton and Chris Benoit, but also this past weekend on Saturday Night Legend, The Enforcer defeating TV champion Lord Steven Regal as well.
Larry Zbyszko: Decisions, decisions. I'm a little biased in all of this because I'd love to see Regal get what he has coming to him, but I really don't see why the man can't do both!? Think about it. Arn Anderson, TV champion and Tag Team champion simultaneously. If anybody in that locker room could manage such a Herculean accomplishment, I'd think it would be him. I've fought alongside him before and I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that he means business.
Tony Schiavone: Alright, and joining us right now as a matter of fact ...
Fresh off the win, Arn Anderson and Shane Douglas enter camera shot, still at ringside following that win.
Tony Schiavone: We were just speaking about it Arn. It would seem that you have a decision to make with 2 big non title victories in the last few days here.
Shane Douglas: Hold on, hold on. Arn, I know you want Regal. You want a piece of him bad! But just think about it man, you and me, champions. We can beat Eaton and Benoit. We can get the job done! They stole those belts from you and Ric, we can bring them back to the stable, back to the Horsemen! Just give me the chance. This is it!
Arn Anderson: Hold on yourself. You know just like all these people know, you're no Horseman yet. You might have got the win in there tonight, but you almost cost us the match as well. But you are right in 1 thing. It would make for a good test. If you can walk alongside me and win these belts, maybe then, you just might be Horseman material. I don't want Regal thinking I'm forgetting about him though because while we might be going after those titles, I still want a piece of you, and I want it next week. If we're going to challenge Eaton and Benoit, I think we need a little warm up. So how about it, here next week, the 2 of us against you and your little French aristocrap protege. What do you say Regal? Unless you're scared that I can beat you again.
Shane Douglas: He'll do it too!
Tony Schiavone: Alright, looks like we have our answer. Commissioner J.J. Dillon and the championship committee no doubt listening to every word. We'll see if Regal and Jean Paul Levesque have an answer of their own for next week before the night is out. Right now though, back up to the ring and more action.

The recent attitude change from Brad Armstrong has turned a lot of fans against him in recent weeks. Not only is it the arrogance, but a degree of hypocrisy as well given he pushes himself as a wrestler's wrestler, meanwhile he had to resort to the added leverage of his own feet on the ropes 2 weeks ago to beat Chris Adams. Last week Armstrong forced himself into the commentary booth for hour #2 on Nitro and after close to an hour of running his mouth, Adams had heard enough, came out and superkicked Armstrong to shut him up for good for the night. Now tonight, the 2 have a rematch signed and Armstrong on Saturday Night promised the wrestling lesson of a lifetime for the Gentleman. The match gets going with a lot of stalling by Armstrong. Adams gets fed up with waiting, eventually going out and chasing him around the ringside area. Armstrong rolls in and catches Adams coming in and gets off to an early advantage. Adams though quickly gets the upperhand when he reverses Armstrong into the ropes and catches him with a fist to the gut. Adams dominates the match with Armstrong playing a more cowardly roll, getting occasional bursts of offense but without much to them that Adams can easily come back from them. Adams downs Armstrong and prepares for a superkick when from the back ...
Toni Adams?! The commentators wonder what she is doing out here, but it is enough that it causes Chris to lose focus and yell for her to get away and leave. She gets on the apron asking that Armstrong be brought over so she can slap him but Chris just grabs her to tell her to leave. Armstrong grabs the referee's attention as Toni then slaps Chris! What the hell?! She quickly drops down from the apron as Chris is yelling at her. Armstrong rushes Chris from behind with a knee to the back and a schoolboy rollup. Add a handful of trunks and Armstrong gets the win before rolling out to the win. The referee exits and raises Armstrong's arm in victory while Adams stands up in disbelief at what just happened. She starts laughing at her husband's expense before going up and embracing Armstrong, infuriating Adams. The commentators have no idea what is going on, just that clearly Armstrong has gone somewhere that Larry Zbyszko thinks is an unwritten code that wrestlers just do not do, emphasizing especially "wrestlers" as Armstrong has been overly labeling himself in recent weeks because clearly this has nothing to do with what goes on in the ring.
-- Third commercial break --
HALLOWEEN HAVOC CONTROL CENTER
- Eric Bischoff is standing by for this week's installment. The event takes place live on PPV in 2 weeks on Sunday October 27 from The Lake Front Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana. Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal as Cactus Jack takes on Sid Vicious, with a spin of the wheel that night determining what type of match the 2 will have. Rowdy Roddy Piper returns to the ring to take on Ravishing Rick Rude. The Nature Boy Ric Flair looks to settle the score with The Lone Wolf Barry Windham. Ice Train to defend the U.S. title against Ron Simmons. Signed over the weekend, it will be The Studd settling his rivalry with Diamond Dallas Page. Just signed after the non title earlier tonight, Arn Anderson and Shane Douglas to challenge the Tag Team champions Bobby Eaton and Chris Benoit for their title. And for the WCW Heavyweight title, Sting challenges Big Van Vader. 7 big matches announced with more matches to be announced over the next week. Halloween Havoc, Sunday October 27, live on PPV. Don't miss it!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tony Schiavone: It is less than 2 weeks away Legend. Halloween Havoc, 1 of the biggest nights of wrestling action of the year, and it is Sunday night, October 27, live on PPV. Some huge matches with Sting and Vader for the WCW title, Roddy Piper and Rick Rude, Cactus Jack and Sid Vicious in Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal, but the 1 that these fans here in Charlotte are waiting for, Ric Flair and Barry Windham. In fact, we saw them at the top of the hour out here. Barry Windham with a restraining order against Ric Flair to keep them apart until the 27th.
Larry Zbyszko: It's just pathetic in my opinion. The fighting should happen in the ring, not a court room. Not running scared and hiding behind a restraining order of all things. He comes out here week after week for almost a year, wanting a piece of Flair, and then when he gets the match, he does this. Just stupid if you ask me.
Tony Schiavone: You do have to admit though, last week showed that The Nature Boy is a potential threat to Windham even making it to Halloween Havoc.
Larry Zbyszko: And whose fault is that? It was Windham that came out and gave Flair the lariat and cost him the titles a couple weeks back. Flair isn't the 1 responsible for Windham losing that New Japanese title that he had. Flair didn't charter a jet over the Pacific just to do a run in on Windham's defense. This is looking to blame and sour grapes if you ask me, and Windham is just going to let that anger build in Flair and come Halloween Havoc, the heated water in the pot will boil over. Maybe even reach a melting point.
Tony Schiavone: It could be. Right now though, David Penzer is standing by because Barry Windham is in action as we head up to the ring for the introduction to our next match.

If the fans needed any extra reason to boo Barry Windham, they got it at the start of tonight's show with The Lone Wolf announcing a restraining order against The Nature Boy Ric Flair to keep them apart until the Halloween Havoc PPV in 13 days time. This comes after Flair ran in and laid into Windham during his match last week on Nitro with Shane Douglas, revenge for Flair after Windham was instrumental in costing him and Arn Anderson the WCW Tag Team title in a match the week before. Windham is hoping it keeps interference to a minimum in this match against 2 Cold Scorpio, but with Flair and what happened last week, who knows? Windham comes out first and the match and Scorpio's introduction after the break.
-- Fourth commercial break --
WCW Saturday Night Preview for October 19
- The U.S. champion Ice Train is in action
- Yoshi Kwan is in action
- The Road Warriors vs Harlem Heat
- All that and more, this Saturday at 6:05 eastern on TBS.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Scorpio is in the middle of an elaborate stepping entrance when the show returns from break, dancing in the ring. Almost immediately after stopping, Windham jumps him from behind and we have our match as the bell rings. Windham lays into Scorpio early on, but he manages to duck a clothesline and jump back with a spinning front kick that connects onto Windham. A few shots are followed by a dropkick that sends Windham out to the floor. Scorpio goes to the apron and steals a page from the Cactus Jack playbook, running on the apron before a somersault dive onto The Lone Wolf. Windham gets rolled into the ring where Scorpio continues until Windham reverses him into the corner. He charges in, but Scorpio moves and he hits the corner hard before a rollup by Scorpio gets a 2. Scorpio keeps up the momentum until Windham jams a thumb into the eye and turns the tide to his favor. After some offense, he sets up for the superplex, but Scorpio fights him off. Windham gets grounded as Scorpio stands and delivers a missile dropkick. Both wrestlers are down before getting up with Scorpio now in the driver's seat. Windham is reeling, but he is able to duck a clothesline coming off the ropes. Scorpio turns as Windham hits the ropes and delivers a big lariat. The cover is made and Windham picks up the 3 count to take the win. After the match he is not finished, perhaps a message to Flair as he grabs Scorpio and picks him up to deliver the Implant DDT. Windham shows he has many ways to put an opponent away here, but the fans start cheering because from the back ...
RIC FLAIR!!! He heads down the aisle with J.J. Dillon eventually jogging towards him to try and talk some sense into him. Flair ignores Dillon and enters the ring as Windham backs up. The commentators mention that if Flair hits Windham here, that could be it for their match at the PPV. Dillon gets in the ring as WCW security along with Doug Dellinger has now surrounded the ringside area. A stern warning is given that Flair needs to leave the ring right now. He frustratingly surrenders himself and starts walking to the ropes. Windham turns his back and throws up his arms in victory like he just got the better of Flair in his hometown or something. It is a swerve though as Flair turns from Dillon and goes to Windham, turning him into several hard chops. Windham gets backed into the corner before being Irish whipped across the ring. Windham hits hard, heading out into a shin breaker from Flair across the knee. He has the leg and turns for the Figure 4 but security grabs Flair and pulls him off! Fans boo as Flair is brought away, fighting to get back at Windham. He has broken the restraining order and this is no joke of a situation as 2 members of the Charlotte police squad are now at ringside and take Flair from security. He gets handcuffed! Ric Flair is being arrested in Charlotte! Far from the homecoming he would have anticipated here and the commentators say that this goes beyond a simple match cancellation now and is a very serious and very real situation. Larry Zbyszko thinks the whole thing is uncalled for and Flair was just doing what he does. Windham is outside of the ring as the police escort Flair away. He laughs at the situation while Flair pointlessly tries kicking him from several feet away to no avail. Dillon is rightfully pissed off about this and is telling Windham off about what just happened, but Windham himself is very defensive of his actions, feeling they were justified in what he can be heard calling "an unsafe work environment" through the camera's audio. A break to try and calm things down as hour #2 approaches.
-- Fifth commercial break --
