From the UNO Lakefront Center in New Orleans, Louisiana
Junkyard Dog defeats Barry Horowitz rather easily at 2:01 with the 'Big Thump' power slam. Post-match JYD says he never asked to be called the 'King of the Mid-South but he'll be damned if he'll allow Big Van Vader to call himself that.
In a re-match from two weeks ago on “Power Pro Wrestling,” Jushin Liger defended the NWA World Jr. Heavyweight Championship against Brad Armstrong. Both “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel and Bob Armstrong were out to corner their respective men.
A hotly contested back and forth affair that saw Brad pull out all the stops to try and put away the champion. However, Liger showed exactly why he is the greatest Jr. Heavyweight in the World today by hulking Armstrong up and hitting him with a running Liger Bomb!
Liger covers – ONE, TWO, NO! Somehow Brad Armstrong is able to grab the bottom rope! Landel runs over to taunt Brad but Bob is there and he shoves Landel back! OH MY GOD – LIGER WIPES OUT BOB ARMSTRONG WITH A DIVE! It look like Liger was trying to protect his friend!
Referee Nick Patrick goes outside to check on Bob Armstrong while Liger recovers from the dive. Inside the ring Brad is just starting to stir when Buddy Landel runs into the ring! LOW BLOW! BRAD GOES DOWN HARD – CORKSCREW ELBOW DROP! WOW, Landel really got some momentum on the elbow!
Landel disappears and Liger climbs back into the ring, NOT knowing what Landel did! Thinking Brad was still down from the Liger Bomb, the champion covers him – ONE, TWO, THREE! Thanks to Buddy Landel, Jushin Liger retains his title at 15:26!
The most hated man in the UWF, Jim Cornette, comes out to unveil the NEW GREATEST TEAM IN THE SPORT OF PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING. Before he does so, he runs down the list of accomplishments of Big Van Vader and Gary Albright, while noting that Albright is just an associate of Cornette, not apart of Cornette's stable.
Cornette motions to the back and introduces...JIMMY DEL RAY AND TOM PRITCHARD, THE HEAVELY BODIES!
The Bodies come out to a chorus of boos due to the association and are adorned in black silk robes with gold trim. Their opponents, the ominous Masked Assassins do not look impressed. When the bell rings, the Bodies are all business and just TEAR apart the Assassins with their double team work.
Del Ray locks one of the Assassins in a camel clutch while Pritchard comes off the ropes and drop kicks him RIGHT in the face. Del Ray then lifts the Assassin up and hands him to Pritchard on the second turnbuckle who comes off with a GIANT power slam! One, two, three! The Heavenly Bodies pick up their debut victory at 5:11.
Cornette gets back on the mic to tell the Steiner Brothers that they will not able to hide from him and the Bodies.
Bob Armstrong vs. “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel – Bob Armstrong is mighty angry from earlier tonight and Buddy spends the first half of the match stalling, running away, and hiding behind Mr. Hughes. Bullet Bob is able to finally get Landel in the ring by the hair and gives him a good old fashioned Southern beating.
Each blow by Bob hits Buddy like a gun shot and Buddy flips and flies all over the ring. Buddy screams “PLAN A” to Hughes as Bob drags him up the hair. A well placed thumb to the eye gets Buddy back in the game and Buddy backs Bob against the ropes to lay in his trademark chops. Referee Sandy Scott intervenes after a five count and just like on TV, Mr. Hughes jumps on the ring apron.
Hughes runs over Bob with a clothesline, NO! NO! BOB ARMSTRONG SAW IT COMING AND DUCKS UNDER! BAM! RIGHT HAND! ANOTHER! The crowd pops as Hughes falls off the apron. HOLD ON – BUDDY LANDEL PUSHES ARMSTRONG INTO THE ROPES – O'CONNOR ROLL! ONE, BUDDY HAS THE TIGHTS! TWO, THREE!
“Nature Boy” Buddy Landel has stolen one from Bob Armstrong at 9:55! Landel high tails it to the back but the menacing Mr. Hughes takes his time while staring down Armstrong.
Intermission - “Dr. Death” Steve Williams, with a cast on his arm, comes out to a HUGE pop. He told everyone he'd be here tonight so here he is. Doc KNOWS it was Gary Albright who attacked him earlier today and he plans on RIPPING Albright's arm off and BEATING him with it the first chance he gets. He reminds Big Van Vader and Jim Cornette that after he gets his revenge on Albright, he's coming straight for them.
“Prime Time” Brian Lee vs. “Dirty” Dutch Mantell - “Prime Time” invites Dutch to bring 'Betsy' the bullwhip into the ring but referee Sandy Scott is NOT having it. This is a grudge match in every sense of the word as Lee is fighting to gain respect and Mantell is fighting to keep it.
“Dirty” Dutch keeps the fight clean for his standards but still fights teeth and nail with Lee. Mantell has Lee up for a scoop slam but Lee slides behind him and NAILS him with a beautiful BIG drop kick, sending Mantell flying to the floor “Prime Time” goes after him and Mantell ducks behind a ringside photographer.
Lee pushes the photographer aside...WAIT A SECOND – THE PHOTOGRAPHER BREAKS HIS CAMERA OVER THE HEAD OF LEE! OH MY GOD! THE PHOTOGRAPHER TAKES OFF HIS GLASSES, HAT, AND WIG...IT'S...IT'S...IT'S...”DIRTY WHITE BOY” TONY ANTHONY!
Brian Lee is bleeding from the head as Anthony and Mantell drag him back into the ring. Sandy Scott disqualifies Dutch Mantell at 11:01 but he can't stop Dutch and Tony. “Dirty White Boy” picks up Brian Lee – BUCKSNORT BLASTER! (choke slam)
Now Anthony lays Lee out on the mat belly first, stretches him out, and holds his legs while “Dirty” Dutch retrieves 'Betsy.' LASH! LASH! LASH! DUTCH MANTELL IS WHIPPING BRIAN LEE LIKE A DOG!
WAIT A SECOND – HERE COMES THE JUNKYARD DOG! AND HE'S SWINGING A CHAIN! The bad guys flee the scene but the damage is done. Lee is left a bloody, battered, and bruised mess.
“Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. Jim Duggan – Long story short, Reed is subbing for Nikita Koloff and Duggan is subbing for Michael Hayes. There's a LOT of history to this one. Reed and Duggan have been the best of friends and the worst of enemies.
The crowd favors Butch Reed more as the bell rings and the two men shake hands. Duggan is subtly the aggressor, NEEDING this win desperately to get back on track. Not a pretty match at all as both men just trade hard, stiff, shots back and forth.
Butch Reed needs this win too to put himself back in the NWA World Title picture and shows his passion by kicking out of a knee drop from the second turnbuckle. Duggan is relentless BUT something just seems off about him.
The two bulls collide when Reed flies off the top with a shoulder block right as Duggan comes charging out of the corner shoulder fist. The impact shakes the ring and both men are down and out.
The count gets to eight when they climb to their feet, using each other as a crutch. They take turns trading thunderous shots but neither man backs down. Duggan comes off the ropes and they collide again. Reed comes off the ropes and they collide again, but neither man goes down.
Jim Duggan tries it a second time but Butch Reed sidesteps his charge and sends him into the ropes. Butch Reed comes off the opposite ropes – FLYING SHOULDER BLOCK! The charging Duggan is LEVELED! ONE, TWO, THREE! “Hacksaw” Butch Reed is one step closer to the NWA World Heavyweight title at 15:43!
After the match, Duggan is devastated. He shakes Reed's hand but quickly heads to the back, his head hung very low.
The main event saw Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy, the Fabulous Freebirds enter the ring looking completely serious and ready for a fight. Gone was Hayes's usual swagger, now replaced by a determination to prove himself.
Completely opposite of their entrance was their opponents, led by the loud mouth Jim Cornette who was screaming at the top of his lungs that tonight was the death of the Freebirds. Big Van Vader and Gary Albright followed closely behind, with Vader shouting “WHOSE THE MAN?” and beating his chest like the behemoth that he is.
Michael Hayes starts for the 'Birds and Vader adamantly wants to start but Cornette stops him long enough for Albright to jump in. The first few minutes are brutal for Hayes as the wrestling machine Albright takes him down and humiliates him on the mat. He smothers him until Hayes resorts to 'Bird tactics and fish hooks Albright to get him to release the hold.
Back to their feet, Albright shoots in for a double leg but Hayes smashes him with a knee to the chin. Hayes takes pleasure in laying a beating on him but Albright is just so damn versatile. He catches Hayes in a waist lock and tries to take hi over but again Hayes is there to smash him in the nose with an elbow. Hayes tags out to Gordy and Vader all but walks into the ring.
Crowd goes a little hush as Vader and Gordy go nose-to-nose. Vader pushes him back with his head which Gordy doesn't take kindly too. Gordy responds with a horrific sounding head butt. Vader smiles before nailing Gordy with an ungodly forearm. What emerges is the most sickening series of strikes fans of the UWF have ever seen.
Forearm, forearm, elbow smash, elbow smash, and still Vader is on his feet! Gordy backs up – BIG BOOT TO THE FACE! AGAIN! Vader is pressed against the ropes and BOTH MEN's faces are a swollen mess. Gordy comes off the ropes looking for the killing blow but BIG VAN VADER TURNS HIM INSIDE OUT WTH A LARIAT! Vader tosses Gordy to his corner and he's calling out Michael Hayes!
Terry Gordy climbs to his feet, shakes off the cob webs and HE'S READY TO GO AGAIN! But wait, Michael Hayes tags himself in! Michael Hayes might be signing his own death warrant here!
Vader mockingly puts his hands behind his back and gives Hayes a free shot. Hayes knuckles up and BLASTS Vader full force in the eye that he hurt earlier today on TV. Even Vader seems taken a back. Hayes doesn't give him a second as he starts attacking the tree trunk legs of the big man – something that NO ONE has tried so far. Hayes clips the leg from behind but Vader still doesn't go down! WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE?!
Vader's eye has awful swelling but he is still able to see well enough to grab the golden locks of Hayes. Hayes looks him right in the eyes and begs him to do his worst. Vader rocks Hayes with a forearm and then tosses him to the ropes. He drops down for a back body drop but Hayes flips over – HE'S TRYING TO PULL VADER DOWN INTO A SUNSET FLIP! Hayes is struggling and struggling but Vader is going nowhere! With a smile on is face, Vader throws a giant bear fist at Hayes – HAYES WIGGLES FREE AND NO ONE IS HOME!
With Vader doubled over momentarily, Hayes runs the ropes BUT CORNETTE IS THERE TO TRIP HIM UP! CORNETTE DOESN'T WANT VADER TO BE TAKEN OFF HIS FEET! LOOK! HERE COMES “DR. DEATH” STEVE WILLIAMS! HE'S GOING AFTER CORNETTE! HE'S CHASED HIM BACK TO THE LOCKER ROOM!
Big Van Vader tags out to Albright and he starting to go after Steve Williams. The referee is has NO IDEA what's going on. Albright picks up the crouched Hayes, OH MY GOD! MICHAEL HAYES NAILS HIM WITH BRASS KNUCKLES! NICK PATRICK'S BACK WAS TURNED! GARY ALBRIGHT GOES DOWN HARD!
MICHAEL HAYES FALLS ON TOP OF HIM – ONE, TWO, THREE! THE FREEBIRDS DID IT! THEY DID IT! MICHAEL HAYES HAS PINNED GARY ALBRIGHT AT 20:25! G
Gary Albright KICKS OUT RIGHT AFTER THREE! He gets up to go after Hayes but Gordy pulls him to the outside and now he and Gordy are going at it! Michael Hayes looks like hell but he's celebrating. One pissed off Vader has made his way back to the ring. Michael Hayes struts towards the corner and he turns around...RIGHT INTO A BIG VAN VADER AVALANCHE! THE RING SHAKES WITH THE IMPACT OF VADER SQUASHING HAYES!
Terry Gordy pulls Hayes to safety but there's no stopping Vader. WAIT, “DR. DEATH” IS BACK! HE SLIDES IN AND OH MY GOD, HE CLOTHESLINES VADER OVER THE TOP ROPE...AND VADER LANDS ON HIS FEET!
ALL HELL HAS BROKEN LOOSE AGAIN! VADER WANTS DOC! DOC WANTS VADER! Albright and a host of officials and security try to restrain Vader BUT HE TURNS ON THEM! HE'S PUNCHING, KICKING, AND TOSSING OFFICIALS AROUND! TERRY GORDY HOLDS DOC BACK FROM GOING OUT THERE! IT'S COMPLETE CHAOS!
Inside the ring, the winners of the match look worse for wear. Doc, hard cast on his arm and all, helps a broken Michael Hayes to his feet, and the three men stand defiantly as the show ends.
