Monday At The Mid-South
Monday Night 6/11/92
Mid-South Coliseum
Memphis, Tenesee
We're kicking off our huge 9 match card tonight with a title match as Brian Christopher puts the USWA Jr. Heavyweight Championship on the line against "Suicide Blonde" Chris Candido Candido was without "Boston Bad Boy" Tony Rumble as promised. Super fun little bout here, with each guy busting out all the stops. Superplex from Candido gets a near fall, Christopher's superkick gets a two count as Candido gets his foot in the ropes. Near the end of the bout, Tony Rumble & Bad Crew come to ringside. Candido's all "What are you doing here" this leads to him getting caught off guard by a second superkick from Christopher and Brian retains at 12:28.
Post Match- Candido throws a temper tantrum in the ring, leading to Triple B taking to the microphone.
Tony Rumble: " Don't worry about it brutha, we'll get 'em next time! "
Candido rips the microphone from Rumble.
Chris Candido: " Next time? ThereISnoNeXTTIMEASFARASYOURCONCERNED... TONY RUMBLE YOU'RE FIRED!"
Rumble pitches a fit, and WHAMO BAD CREW attacks Candido from behind! Brian Christopher re-emerges from the locker room as the heels back off.... ONLY FOR CHRISTOPHER TO TURN AROUND AN LAY CANDIDO OUT WITH A SUPERKICK!!!! What in the world is going on? Bad Crew & Rumble join back in on the attack, and there is NO one out to save Candido! Rumble & his boys get bored of it after a bit, he calls Candido a bum and they toss 'em thru the ropes. Bad Crew & Rumble make their exit, leaving Brian in the ring.Christopher is getting some boo's now from the crowd, and it's getting to him. At first he's angry about it, but then he accepts it almost mocking the crowd with a pose!
Singles action follows as The Spellbinder makes his Mid South Coliseum debut against Bobby Knight. Bobby Knight tries with all his might, but the Spellbinder is a true force to be reckoned with in there. The big man picks up the win off a spin wheel kick at 4:16.
The USWA Tag Team Titles are on the line next as the Fantastics (Tommy Rogers & Bobby Fulton) defend against the visiting Tennessee Volunteers (Reno Reggins & Steve Doll). Before the match starts the heels take to the microphone to insult Memphis and put over their home city of Knoxville. They've got the KAW belts with them, but they're never referred to as champions of course. Fun little match with these two teams meshing quite well. Finnish is never in doubt, but thru classic heel tactics and good old fashioned stalling the Volunteers put up quite the fight before Reggins gets put away off a top rope double dropkick from the champions at 13:38.
"Terrific" Terry Taylor makes his return to the Mid South Coliseum as he goes one on one with Marcus Alexander Bagwell. Taylor is of course accompanied to the ring by Paul E. Dangerously. Back and forth match thru and thru, the action really starts to pick up a good 15 minutes into the bout. They're building towards a time limit draw it seems, and that's exactly what we get with Bagwell scoring with his Fisherman's Suplex JUST as the 20 Minute Time Limit Expires! Official Result: 20 Minute Time Limit Draw.
Tag Team Grudge Match just before intermission as "Simply Irreristable" Jeff Jarrett RETURNS teaming with TV5 Champion "Superstar" Bill Dundee against the duo of Billy Joe Travis & Bodyguard Rod! Lots of running from Travis, but in the end he can escape the baby face team. Doesn't go as long as you would imagine as Jarrett is able to get Travis alone and put him away with a second rope dropkick at 6:34!
Post Match- Dundee grabs up the guitar and hands it over to Jarrett! Billy Joe begs for his life, wild swing from Double J MISSES and Rod pulls Travis to safety! Talk about a successful return here tonight by Jeff Jarrett!
Intermission
Back from intermission with a grudge match as Wolfie D w/ New Jack goes one on one with Koko B. Ware. Remember if Koko wins here tonight he gets 5 minutes with New Jack. 4 minutes into the bout and Jack strikes with the Blackjack causing the DQ! Koko gets 5 minutes with New Jack but he's down and out! New Jack laughs it up as Koko pulls himself to his feet, only for Jack to strike AGAIN with the Blackjack! The official yanks it away from him, and Koko pulls himself to his feet again... only to fall flat on his face.. Eddie Marlin is out, we're not getting 5 minutes. Jack laughs it up with Wolfie on the outside and a ringside doctor checks on a down and out Koko B. Ware.
One of our huge featured matches followed as "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert w/ Paul E. Dangerously put the USWA Heavyweight title on the line against "The Beast From The East" Bam Bam Bigelow. The real story here is of course the special guest referee Jerry "the King" Lawler. Super fun match, both guys get into it from time to time with Lawler. Steel chair gets involved and it's the Summerslam '97 finish fans as Lawler ends up taking it from Gilbert.. winds up AND WHAMO Gilbert moves and the King takes out Bigelow! Paul E. jumps for joy as the King has NO CHOICE but to count the fall and give Eddie the win at 13:37!
Post Match- The King refuses to raise Gilbert's hand in victory, but hey Paul E. does so it's all the same. They're out of there quickly as is the King. When Bam Bam comes to his shouting for the King as he stomps to the dressing room!
Paul E's back out for our first of two main events as he leads his charge: "Universal Heartthrob" Austin Idol into NON-title action against NWA World Champion: Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat. Think Steamboat/Flair here as far as formula goes, with Idol working on the Dragon's knee throughout and Steamer drawing from the crowd fore comeback spots. SHOCKING finish as we trade backslides with IDOL PINNING THE DRAGON CLEAN IN THE MIDDLE at 25:08! The Dragon kicks up JUST after 3! Austin Idol has pinned the World Champion fans, and I'm sure we're never gonna hear the end of it!
Second Intermission Of course this is done to set up the cage. Those who've never seen the Memphis style cage, it's more like a hell in the cell than anything else as the cage touches the arena floor and surrounds the ring rather than connects to the ring.
Main Event Steel Cage War Fare! The Disciples (Payne & Demolisher) w/ Daryl Van Horne battle it out with arch rivals the Bruise Brothers (Don & Ron Harris). Van Horne is forced to watch from outside the cage. It's a freaking blood bath, face paced with all four men showing color just a few minutes in. Near the end we get an H Bomb on Demolisher, but the Brothers choose not to cover and instead hit one on Payne too! Cover gets them a three count to SEEMINGLY send the fans home happy at 12:34.
Post Match- I say seemingly 'cause it isn't over yet. With the crowd cheering them on the Bruise Brothers go to the outside and chase Van Horne into the cage, making sure to lock the door behind them. As Van Horne pleads for his life....
THIS STALKS TO THE RING... looking about 7 feet tall face covered in a red hockey mask... his first task is to RIP THE CAGE DOOR OFF WITH HIS FREAKING BARE HANDS! Both Harris brothers immediatly attack him with rights and lefts, but they're NO SOLD! They both eat a double clothesline and it's at this point that the Disciples get back involved, keeping Don Harris occupied while this freaking 7 ft killer is with Ron. POWER BOMB FOR RON HARRIS! The Disciples than feed the big man Don, and DON HARRIS takes a POWER BOMB! This must be the "end of days" Van Horne was talking about! The Disciples, at Van Horne command kneel before the monster! Daryl joins them moments later, but this monster of a man ignored them and EXITS the ring, Van Horne & company tail 'em. What in the world have we just scene? What kind of power does this man hold, he just took on BOTH FREAKING BRUISE BROTHERS!
