Kick Ass Wrestling
6/2/1992
Live at the New Daisy Theater
Memphis, Tennessee
Saturday night's alright for fighting and the New Daisy Theater had Kick Ass Wrestling in the house. David Jett opened the festivities for the evening. A relatively young and rowdy crowd was up for some "Southern Fried 'Rasslin", even moreso by the announcement of a Strap Match in the Main Event between Mike Samples and Doug Gilbert.
The opener saw Alfonso Dantes' son, Apolo out with the Lucha Factory sign before his opponent, Ben Jordan was led to the ring by area veteran, Ken Timbs. Before the start of the match, Alfonso seemed a little out of sorts as he complained to referee Ed Rusk. A lively first match which saw Apolo take things into high gear with his high flying that got the crowd out of their seats. Imagine Apolo's surprise when Jordan got his knees up to thwart Dantes' top rope splash. A swinging neckbreaker later, Ben Jordan picked up the victory in a little over 8 minutes.
The loss did not sit well with the Senior Dantes who tagged Jordan with his Lucha Factory sign over the head. Before things got any uglier, Ken Timbs jumped in for a few words with Alfonso Dantes who collected his son and left.
The announced match between Todd Morton and Falk U student, Scott Taylor was interrupted by the Tennessee Volunteers, Steve Doll and Reno Riggins.
Steve Doll: "Hold on one second. These people paid good money to see Tennessee's best ... that's us ... Knoxville's Finest, Steve Doll and Reno Riggins ... the Tennessee Volunteers. So, if you two and all these stupid people don't mind, we're here to kick your asses!"
The Vols heeled it up big time, cheap shotting their opponents before the bell and continuing on with the underhanded tactics througout. What they didn't expect was for their opponents to fight back. Morton, who knows a thing or two about tag team wrestling meshed well with the technical Taylor and the Professor, Tony Falk threw in some strategy. Morton had Doll begging off but a low blow put the comeback to rest and the double teaming tactics of the Vols were just too much to overcome. A double DDT gave the Vols the win, pinning Scotty Taylor at 11:12.
The victorious Vols were quickly led away from the ring by security following an altercation with a somewhat inebriated customer while Tony Falk promised the fans, "they'd get them next time."
The "Pimp Daddy" Reggie B. Fine came out in all his finery and jawed with the crowd before stopping in front of a familiar red haired woman from the Plush Club show.
Reggie B. smooth talked the woman while showing her his chains and Rolex, or at least what he claimed was a Rolex. His opponent for the evening, Izzy, who waited patiently inside the ring. With the fans getting a little impatient, Reggie B. did his best to quiet them, claiming "they's bidness goin' on up hyare."
The woman wasn't buying and put here hand up to tell him so. Reggie B. got the double whammy when he turned directly into Izzy's baseball slide to the outside. Reggie B. squealed like a little girl and yelled about "not dirtyting the rental!"
He might be small but today Izzy was full of fight and took it to his opponent. First outside the ring where Reggie B. did his best to get away and inside the ring. Several times Reggie tried to escape to the outside but Izzy kept the pressure on him, backed by the fans. In a tug of war over the white coat, Reggie B. lost as he fled to the outside after taking several dropkicks. While Izzy stomped the coat, Reggie called for a time out.
Back to the red headed woman, Reggie B. showed her his ring collection and again, she rebuffed him and turned away. Izzy spun Reggie B. around but this time the "Pimp Daddy" was ready with a ring aided knuckle sandwich. Izzy was staggered while Reggie quickly pocketed the jewelry before the referee got both men back into the ring. A big back body drop and a boot to the mush looked like the end of the match ... UNTIL the red headed woman climbed up onto the ring apron. Referee Al Hall warned her back to her seat but Reggie B. said he'd "take care of it" and moved him out of the way. Reggie B. worked his magic and smiled when the woman motioned for him to come closer. As he did so, she let fly with a big slap to the face. Shocked, Reggie B. was even moreso as he flailed his arms when Izzy school boyed and pulled him to the mat. Hall made the count ... 1! 2! 3! Izzy, with a little help from his new friend, pulled off the win at 9:22.
To add insult to injury, the young woman grabbed Reggie B.'s coat before the two of them fled the ring area! Reggie B. complained to the referee about his hair being pulled and when that didn't work about his tights being held. When he realized the coat was gone, he dashed off after the pair.
Intermission time was more of a beer run and bathroom break time with Ken Timbs, Ben Jordan, Kevin Lawler, Jamie Dundee working the crowd and selling merch. Bert Prentice made a showing and announced KAW popping up all over the Memphis area and told the fans to watch out for it coming to television in the very near future. Bodybuilder Reggie Bennett was set up at a table selling photographs and arm wrestling fans for $10 a pop.
Up next was tag team action with the second generation duo of Jamie Dundee and Kevin Lawler against Rainbow Brown and the masked Yellowjacket. Standard tag action with Dundee and Lawler firmly in control over the Yellowjacket with a little bit of a comeback by Rainbow Brown but in the end, the duo busted out their more famous fathers' moves, from the straps coming down and a fist drop from Lawler and a "Bomb's Away" to win the match by Dundee. The time, 13:16. The victors signed some autographs and mugged it up with the fans afterwards.
The Main Event kicked off with referee Ed Rusk hooking both Mike Samples and Doug Gilbert to the leather strap. A little back and forth between the two as they did some verbal sparring before the start of the match. Samples saying that Doug was NOT brother Eddie sent Doug over the edge and we were underway. As if their previous encounters needed anything added to it, this just escalated the violence. No wrestling here, just a brutal welt-raising experience that had the crowd howling for blood. Gilbert busted Samples open early and seemed to take pleasure in whipping his opponent and asking him how he liked it? Gilbert slipped a couple of times when he called Samples Eddie. Not to go down without a fight, Mike Samples fought back and busted Gilbert open with the strap around his throat before he rammed his head repeatedly into the ringpost. Samples bulldog onto the floor did a number on Gilbert that left a puddle of blood. Ed Rusk looked ready to call the match but Samples shoved him away as he led Gilbert all over the place and beat him like a red headed stepchild. They both got up close and personal with the fans, knocking several over as they staggered their bloody way around the New Daisy. Gilbert, with a thumb to Samples' eye, regained control before he started gnawing on his opponent's head.
Downright brutal before the pair made their way back into the ring where Gilbert whipped Samples across the ring and over the top rope. Pulling on the strap, Gilbert held on for dear life as Samples hung there, fighting to break free. Ed Rusk was whipped when he tried to break help Samples as was Bert Prentice when he ran down to the ring. Gilbert kept asking "who was better now?" as Ken Timbs, Ben Jordan, Kevin Lawler and Jamie Dundee all hit the ring and tried to free Samples. In the pandemonium of pulling the pair apart, the bell sounded for a time limit draw at 30 minutes.
With the two pulled apart and the straps removed, Doug Gilbert, his eyes wide in a maniacal stare, through the crimson mask, watched as Samples, holding his throat, pointed back at Gilbert as he shook his head. This was far from over!
