Taped at the Irish McNeil Boy's Club in Shreveport, Louisiana
The show opens with highlights of Big Van Vader destroying Paul Orndorff last week, Orndorff then leaving on a stretcher, and the huge brawl that started between “Dr. Death” Steve Williams and Terry Gordy just as the show went off the air. Highlights also air from Wednesday night's Municipal Auditorium show of Vader delivering the Vader Splash to Jim Duggan, Steve Williams coming out to save Duggan, and Vader laughing as Duggan snapped his 2x4 across Vader's back.
UWF President Bill Watts is in the ring with a small army of security guards separating “Dr. Death” Steve Williams from Big Van Vader and Jim Cornette. Watts explains that Paul Orndorff will be out of action for awhile due to a severe back injury but there's no action he can take against Vader because the injury occurred inside the confines of a wrestling match.
Cornette interrupts to tell Watts he needs to take action against his two boys Doc and Gordy for callously attacking Big Van Vader two-on-one, EVEN THOUGH Vader can take both of them any day. Watts thanks Jim for helping him get to his point and that is signing the main event for the big card at the UNO Lakefront Center in one week. He says he thought Jim would say that Vader can take both of them so that's why he has booked Steve Williams and Terry Gordy vs. Big Van Vader in a handicap match as the main event for the New Orleans show!
Doc looks pleased and even Vader looks pleased but Jim Cornette doesn't in the slightest. Jim tells Bill to slow and just because Vader can doesn't mean he should have too. Now Vader doesn't look too happy but Cornette assures him that negotiations like this are the reason why Vader brought him aboard. Cornette says Vader will only do the match if it's a tag match. Bill Watts agrees to this and asks who Vader's partner will be. Jim Cornette tells him not to worry because everyone will know in due time. Watts doesn't approve but Doc interjects and says he doesn't care who Vader's partner is, he just wants the chance to get his hands on him. The two have a stern stare down from across the ring which causes the security to tense up. It's official folks – In one week at the UNO Lakefront Center in New Orleans Steve Williams and Terry Gordy will take on Big Van Vader and A Mystery Partner!
As everyone turns to leave Cornette questions the toughness of Steve Williams due to the caliber of his opponent tonight. This does not go over well with Doc. Bill Watts holds him back and asks Jim Cornette just what he's getting at. Jim says that if Doc thinks he's as tough as Vader then he should be able to beat the same guys Vader has. He proposes that Big Van Vader takes Steve's place in the match against Rex King today and that Steve Williams face the same man that Vader beat last week in Jim Duggan. Watts tells Doc that he doesn't have to prove anything to anyone and he shouldn't let a little pip squeak like Cornette try to bait him into anything. Steve Williams accepts the match and tells Bill Watts he's not going to let ANYONE, especially Jim Cornette question HIS toughness.
Bill Watts announces that indeed Jim Duggan is here and indeed he is medically cleared to wrestle. He is going to shuffle around today's card but it's official – today's main event will be Jim Duggan vs. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams!
Commercial Break - Local advertisements air for this Thursday at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette where the Junkyard Dog is ready to give the 'Big Thump' to Big Van Vader!
Jim Ross recaps all of the action that went down before the commercial break and says he has no idea what's going to happen in two weeks when Doc and Vader are finally able to put their hands on each other. He hopes the ring will be able to contain all the carnage. Ross quickly runs down the card for today:
Big Van Vader takes Doc's place against Rex King
“Nature Boy” Buddy Landel puts the youngest Armstrong, Brian Armstrong to the test
Michael Hayes goes out on his own against Hector Guerrero
The card has been reshuffled and the NEW Main Event for today will see two UWF favorites battle it out as Jim Duggan squares off against “Dr. Death” Steve Williams!
10 Minute Time Limit: Big Van Vader vs. Rex King – Vader has been in the ring since the commercial break just stalking around the ring waiting for King. Before the bell rings, Vader beats his chest ferociously and there is a “hint” of nervousness on the face of King.
Big Van Vader destroys poor young Rex King. He only manages a punch or two before a GIANT headbutt sends him crashing to the mat. Vader presses King over his head and then drops King into his arms and delivers a bone shattering power slam. King's prone body is pulled to the corner where the TV audience is treated to their first view of the Vader Splash. Poor King is crushed under the 450 pound frame of Vader. OH NO – VADER ISN'T DONE YET! A SECOND VADER SPLASH! This time he stays on top for the pin at 2:34.
Jim Cornette gets on the mic again to proclaim that Big Van Vader is the baddest, toughest, and most dangerous man in pro wrestling and soon the entire world. He reminds the fans that Vader has NEVER been pinned, NEVER been submitted, and has NEVER EVER been lifted off his feet. Cornette chuckles as he says that the Vader Bomb and Vader Splash aren't even the most devastating move in his arsenal.
As Rex King is taken out of the ringside area on a stretcher, Vader growls and screams “WHOSE THE MAN?”
Commercial Break– JUST ANNOUNCED: NWA Jr. Heavyweight Champion Jushin Liger will defend his title in a rematch against Brad Armstrong next week at the UNO Lakefront Center in New Orleans! Liger will wrestle here next week on “Power Pro Wrestling!”
The show comes back with a video of a wheelchair bound Paul Orndorff from his home in Tampa, Florida. Paul says that he spent the entire last week in the hospital because of what Big Van Vader did to him. Vader messed up his back pretty good and the doctors told him he may never wrestle. Orndorff slowly stands up out of the wheelchair: “Make no mistake about it, I'll be back. And when I do come back, Vader, I'm coming to HURT you.”
Jim Ross talks about the strong words we just heard from Paul Orndorff and in all the years he's known Paul, he was never seen him that angry.
“Nature Boy” Buddy Landel joins Bill Watts for an interview before his match. Landel is sporting a nice bruise on his face courtesy of Steve Williams. The “Nature Boy” first calls himself the TRUE “Nature Boy” in the NWA and recounts a story about how he got the hell out of the South the MINUTE he learned how to walk. Now he's back in the UWF, in the South again, and it's like torture to him. Speaking of torture, this past week he had to wrestle not a man, but an animal. An animal with no couth that just wanted to damage his beautiful face. Watts interjects that he would really like to see Buddy say this to Doc's face. Buddy ignores him and continues by saying that it caused him to reevaluate somethings about his career. He realized he needed an “insurance policy.” Buddy coughs and corrects himself – he realized he needed a manager. On cue
]out from the back comes...Curtis Hughes!
Dressed in suit, tie, suspenders, sunglasses and hat, Buddy introduces him as Mr. Hughes and says that he has all the qualities he's looking for in a...”manager.” Watts asks to see a manager's license and Hughes hands him a crumpled up piece of paper from his pocket. Bill questions the validity of the license but will allow Hughes to be at ringside FOR NOW. Buddy tries to leave but Watts sternly warns him that he is going to look into this.
10 Minute Time Limit: Brian Armstrong vs. “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel – Brian gets a very nice reaction after being announced as the son of Bob Armstrong. Buddy tries to mess around with him but soon finds that Brian can hold his own and takes a powder to the floor to confer with Mr. Hughes.
Commercial Break - Local advertisements air for this Thursday at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette where “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel, “Dirty” Dutch Mantell, and Al Snow are teaming up to take out Brian Lee and Bob and Brad Armstrong.
Ross says that during the break Brian tried to pull Buddy back into his hair but got his throat dropped across the top rope for his trouble. The camera man gets close enough to Buddy to hear him say “Plan A” to Mr. Hughes before he re-enters the ring. Brian takes the fight to him once again, not quitting but Landel thumbs him in the eye to stop him.
“Nature Boy” presses Brian back first against the ropes and unloads with brutal chops to Brian's chest. He continues and continues until finally referee Carl Fergie forces a break. Buddy distracts him by arguing allowing Mr. Hughes to jump onto the apron and drill Brian Armstrong with a running clothesline! Landel jumps on him, pulling him to the middle of the ring and locking on the Figure Four! Brian Armstrong loudly submits at 6:16 but Landel WILL NOT let go!
Referee Fergie tries to pry him off. HOLD ON...LOOK IT'S BOB ARMSTRONG! Bob slides into the ring and stomps right on the face of Buddy. Buddy immediately lets go and screams for Mr. Hughes to get him out of there. Mr. Hughes pulls Buddy to safety while Bob checks on his son. Ross notes that Bob looks very fired up today.
Bob Armstrong gets on the mic and says men like Buddy Landel disgust him. He calls Buddy extremely talented but his downfall is that he's lazy, he takes advantage of people, and he's always looking for the easy way out. Bob says that neither he nor Buddy have a match next Sunday night in New Orleans so why don't get in the ring and settle this like men. He adds that he really would like to see Buddy pull those cheap tricks on him. Armstrong throws the mic at Buddy who cowers behind Mr. Hughes. Hughes picks up for him and its then you can see Buddy bleeding from the lip.
The “Nature Boy” thinks that the 'banana-nosed' Bullet Bob needs to stay out of his son's businesses. Buddy says Bob disgusts him because he's like that dad at the football games that's always yelling at the coach to give his son more playing time. He accepts Bob's challenge and is going to make him pay dearly for making him bleed. Buddy says he has no problem making another bastard Armstrong submit next Sunday.
This does not sit well with Bob who gives chase to Buddy. Buddy takes off to the back while Hughes and Bob almost get into a scuffle.
Commercial Break - Local advertisements air for this Thursday at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette where Butch Miller and Luke Williams, the Sheepherders are returning to the UWF to cause some chaos and shed some blood. “Just when ya thought it was safe to come to the wrestling matches, the ole Sheepherders return!”
Back from the break Bill Watts is standing by with newcomer “Prime Time” Brian Lee. Lee talks about how he's spent this past week battling Dutch Mantell all over the Mid-South and EVERYTIME he's about to put Dutch away, Dutch finds a way to use the bullwhip on him. Lee removes his jacket and the camera zooms on the several marks, bruises, and welts on Lee's back. He says it took him awhile but now he can see the yellow stripe running down “Dirty” Dutch's back. Lee saw it very well this past week because Dutch kept running away instead of fighting him like a man.
This insult brings out “Dirty” Dutch Mantell and his bullwhip 'Betsy' and neither of them look happy. Dutch thinks it's time that Brian Lee shut his mouth and learn some respect. What he's been doing this week is whipping some respect into “Prime Time.” He says that Lee's FLUKE win means nothing and when it comes to fighting like a man, there is NO ONE manlier then “Dirty” Dutch Mantell. Mantell gives Lee one last chance to walk away and he'll forget about all the disrespect Lee has shown him the past weeks. Brian Lee tells him to save his breath cause there's not a chance in hell he's backing down. Bill Watts steps in between the two and tells them they can settle it in the ring next Sunday night in New Orleans. Brian Lee is fine with this and he tells Dutch there will no where for him to run. Dutch responds the only way Dutch can...by spitting a wad of chewing tobacco into the face of “Prime Time.” Bill Watts holds him back as the show heads to commercial.
Commercial Break – Next Sunday night the UWF will be having their first BIG show of the year at the UNO Lakefront Center in New Orleans. A few tickets are still available! Call now!
15 Minute Time Limit: Hector Guerrero vs. Michael Hayes – Both Terry Gordy and Mando Guerrero accompany their partners to the ring. Hayes starts off the match by wrestling with Guerrero which Jim Ross thinks might not work out too well. He surprises Hector, the fans, and Ross with some solid mat wrestling. Hector gets thrown to the mat with headlock take down but yanks on the hair of Hayes to get him to break the hold! Referee Nick Patrick warns him about it but Hector holds up the handful of hair like it's a trophy!
Commercial Break – Next week on “Power Pro Wrestling” NWA Jr. Heavyweight Champion Jushin Liger will be in action, just hours before his big rematch with Brad Armstrong!
Jim Ross explains that all the handful of hair did was make Michael Hayes angry. During the break Hayes pummeled Hector all over the ring and then threw him to the outside. A near skirmish occurred between the two teams but Nick Patrick was there to break it up. The momentary distraction allowed Hector to shove Hayes shoulder first into the ring post!
Hayes kicks out at two and looks frustrated that he allowed Hector to sneak up on him. Hector showcases his quick offense and Hayes can't seem to mount a comeback. After a springboard arm drag that sends Hayes flying across the ring, Hector Guerrero heads up to the top. He jumps off with a missile dropkick BUT NO ONE IS HOME! Michael Hayes just swats him out of mid-air!
The crowd gets behind Hayes who pumps himself up and puts a whipping on Hector Guerrero. A short-arm clothesline staggers Hector – DDT! DDT! One, two, three! Michael Hayes picks up the SINGLES victory at 9:45!
The Fabulous Freebirds stop for a word with Bill Watts. Watts first asks Terry Gordy what he thinks about Big Van Vader. A man of few words Terry Gordy explains that he's made his name in pro wrestling being the toughest guy in the locker room. If Vader wants to call himself that then he's going to have to take it from him. And he wants Vader to try, very badly.
Michael Hayes admits to Bill Watts that Jim Cornette did get to him last week and maybe Jim is right. While Gordy made his career off being the tough guy, he made his career off of running his mouth and then hiding behind Gordy. He says that first and foremost the Freebirds are a team and they are gunning for the NWA World Tag Team Titles but Hayes is also going out on his own to prove to himself he can do it. That's why next Sunday night he's signed a contract to face his toughest singles opponent yet – the debuting Nikita Koloff!
AGAIN Hayes is interrupted by the sounds of a cackling Jim Cornette! Waving his tennis racket around Jim applauds Hayes for another “beautiful” speech. He says that it's great that Hayes thinks the Freebirds can rest on their laurels and their past reputation and still be called the best tag team in the UWF. He has news for them – next Sunday night will mark the debut of the FUTURE NWA World Tag Team Champions and the team that will OUTCLASS and EMBARRASS the Fabulous Freebirds. Hayes tells Cornette that he does do a lot of talking. The quick witted Cornette says coming from Michael Hayes that is really rich. Being completely serious, Jim Cornette tells Hayes that even if Terry Gordy got hit by a truck and lost both of his arms tomorrow, Hayes would STILL BE the weak-link of the Freebirds. “Try, try, and try all you want pretty boy Hayes. When it comes down to it and the going gets tough, you will ALWAYS cower behind Terry Gordy.”
Commercial Break - Next Sunday night the UWF will be having their first BIG show of the year at the UNO Lakefront Center in New Orleans. A few tickets are still available! Call now!
A video airs of Jim Duggan sitting in the locker room from earlier today. His ribs are heavily tapped up from the Vader Splash last week. Duggan says he has never seen the raw power that he saw in Big Van Vader. His eyes stare away from the camera and he holds his ribs as if he is remembering the force of the Vader slamming down on him. Duggan balls up his fist and says he's been knocked down a lot in his career but he always gets backed up. He's been medically cleared to wrestle and he's not going to let a couple bruised ribs from getting back up. Jim loves Doc like a brother and thanks for coming out last week but he NEEDS this win. He repeats that Vader DID NOT break him but if he gets the chance again, he fully intends on BREAKING Vader.
“Dr. Death” Steve Williams is with Bill Watts for a quick word before his match. Williams says he's been over to Japan and he's seen the destruction Big Van Vader has caused. Vader is real. But Vader has never stepped into the ring with him. Vader is trying to leave a trail of broken bodies on his way to the NWA World Heavyweight Title. Broken bodies of Doc's friends. He's not going to let that happen. This isn't business. This isn't wrestling. This IS personal. Big Van Vader is double tough but “Dr. Death” is the toughest son of a bitch in the Mid-South. Doc is drawing the line in the sand and next Sunday night, he's coming to New Orleans...to kick Vader's ass.
20 Minute Time Limit – Television Main Event: Jim Duggan vs. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams – This is the type of main event that the UWF fans love. A handshake to start but then the fists start flying. Both men are friends and as such, Doc doesn't target the already injured ribs of Duggan. Duggan shows a lot of passion in this, looking like he's trying to reclaim something he lost in the battle against Vader. A thunderous double clothesline puts both men down on the mat and Jim Ross lets us know that this will be the last commercial break of the show.
Commercial Break - Local advertisements air for this Thursday at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette where Bob and Brad Armstrong and “Prime Time” Brian Lee are looking to give the fans just want they want to see – Buddy Landel, Dutch Mantell, and Al Snow getting their yellow bellied butts whipped!
Jim Ross lets us know that during the break “Dr. Death” got a near fall off the double clothesline. It's at points like this in a match where endurance really counts and Ross thinks those injured ribs are hampering Duggan's breathing. Duggan proves Ross wrong, battling out of a belly-to-back suplex and hitting Doc with a big suplex. He follows up with a jumping knee drop and covers...one, two, kick out by Doc!
Jim Duggan positions himself in the corner down in the three-point stance. Steve Williams climbs back to his feet and SIDESTEPS the charging Duggan! Duggan slams full force into the buckles and rebounds off RIGHT INTO A BELLY-TO-BACK SUPLEX BY DOC! Doc bridges – one, two, three! NO! Kick out at two and a half by Jim Duggan!
Now Williams picks Doc up and places him over his shoulder for the Oklahoma Stampede. As he's charging into the corner Duggan slips out of his grasp and down his back! Steve turns around – THREE-POINT STANCE SHOULDER BLOCK! ONE, TWO, NO! “DR. DEATH” WILL NOT BE DENIED! The crowd is really getting into these two big bulls doing whatever it takes to put each other away.
Again Duggan sets himself up in the corner. Doc balls up his fists and pushes himself back to his feet. Duggan NAILS HIM WITH THE SHOULDER BLOCK! WAIT – NO! DOC CATCHES AND HITS HIM WITH A BELLY-TO-BELLY SUPLEX! Steve Williams explodes back to his feet and he has Duggan over his shoulder. He runs into the buckles – OKLAHOMA STAMPEDE! ONE, TWO, THREE! WOW! “Dr. Death” Steve Williams wins a hell of a battle at 12:42!
Jim Duggan is clutching his ribs hard after that slam but “Dr. Death” helps him to his feet, embraces him, and raises his hand. Duggan looks frustrated and disappointed. Jim Ross thinks Duggan has nothing to be ashamed about because he put up a hell of fight here today. Duggan retrieves his 2x4 from the corner when none other then Jim Cornette saunters out from the locker room!
Jim Cornette says there's nothing he likes seeing more then two men he doesn't like beating up each other. Cornette says that's personal but he's out here now for business. He announces that next Sunday night Big Van Vader's partner will be...JIM DUGGAN?! Cornette tells Doc to turn around and then Cornette scurries off to the back!
When Steve turns around he finds Jim Duggan right behind him holding up his 2x4 in the air! Doc asks him what's going on but Duggan has NO IDEA. He tells Steve again and again that he is not with Jim Cornette! Jim Ross hopes that Doc isn't buying into Jim Cornette's tricks and he believes wholeheartedly that Duggan was just playing to the crowd – not intending on hitting “Dr. Death” with his 2x4.
The broadcast ends with Duggan and Williams arguing in the ring. Jim Duggan shoves Williams and heads to the back, not appreciating the accusation that he is throwing Duggan's way.
