On Friday, Jim Ross, UWF President Bill Watts, and Paul Orndorff were invited to the KTBS Studios in Shreveport, Louisiana to do a piece for the 6 O’clock on Universal Wrestling Federation's “Power Pro Wrestling” that will start airing Sunday afternoons on KTBS Channel 3.
Respected wrestling announcer and wrestling journalist Jim Ross led the interview, first asking Bill Watts what the fans could expect from the new Universal Wrestling Federation. Watts said they could expect hard hitting, in your face physicality from the toughest athletes in professional wrestling. He goes on to explain that not only are the wrestlers of the UWF professional wrestlers but many are athletes and champions in other sports. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams was a college All-American in football and amateur wrestling, Gary Albright was a very well accomplished college amateur wrestling champion, the Junkyard Dog was an All-American in college football, and Jim Duggan was a star athlete in football, track, wrestling, and basketball and went on to play for the Atlanta Falcons.
Bill Watts adds that there are many legitimate tough guys in the UWF that shouldn't be discounted either like Paul Orndorff, Terry Gordy, Bob Armstrong, and...Big Van Vader. Watts says that he is most excited that to see Big Van Vader competing in a UWF ring.
Jim Ross asks Bill Watts to tell the viewers more about Vader. Clips of Big Van Vader wrestling (well, demolishing) are shown from all over the world as Bill talks about him. At 6'5” and 450 pounds, Big Van Vader is a walking, death machine. He left the United States five years ago to travel around the world and to prove he is the toughest man alive. Since then he's gone to Europe, Mexico, and Japan and crushed all their top competition and won all of their major titles. Vader has come back to the United States and has come to the UWF for one reason – to win the most important title in the world of professional wrestling, the NWA World Heavyweight Title and finally prove that he is the toughest man alive. In Watt's opinion, Vader may very well already be that.
With that being said, Ross announces that the main event of the first “Power Pro Wrestling” this Sunday will be – Big Van Vader vs. Paul Orndorff!
Jim Ross turns to Paul Orndorff and asks him his thoughts about being back here in the Mid-South area and about his match with Vader on Sunday. Orndorff says that the people in the Mid-South saw him grow from a rookie to one of the biggest stars in professional wrestling. He loves that he's back in Mid-South and he came back because of great competition like Vader. Paul says that Bill Watts brought him the contract first and there was no chance he was going to turn a match of this caliber down. He says that even with all of the experience he has, he is still very much a “student of the game” and he's watched all the tape he can get on Big Van Vader...and he believes the hype. Paul's seen the way Vader's run over people in Europe, squashed people in Mexico, and demolished them in Japan. He's seen all this footage and he is NOT afraid. He is NOT scared and he is NOT going to back down from this challenge. If Vader wants to make an impact in the United States and wants to get a shot at Ricky Steamboat – he's going to have to go through Paul Orndorff first.
Before Ross can ask another question, Jim Cornette sneakily walks onto the set, smirking and tapping his tennis racket into his outstretched palm. Watts tells him he wasn't invited here and Ross asks him how he got in the studio at all. Cornette ignores them and gets right in front of the camera to announce that this Sunday on “Power Pro Wrestling”, James E. Cornette has a BIG surprise for Bill Watts and every UWF wrestler on the roster.
The executives at KTBS apparently aren't too happy with Cornette's interruption because they send security to the set to remove him! They comically hook their arms around Cornette and start to drag him away! Bill Watts tries very hard to suppress a laugh and the laughing causes Cornette to go beat red. “Yeah Watts, you can laugh all you want now. Laugh it up. I want you to. 'Cause after Sunday, you won't have ANYTHING TO LAUGH ABOUT!”
Static. Commercial break.
