Monday At The Mid-South
Monday Night 7/30/92
Mid-South Coliseum
Memphis, Tenesee
Exciting Jr. Heavyweight Action kicks off this Monday's show with Too Cold Scorpio going one on one with the visiting world traveler, Japan's Osamu Nishimura. Fine little match right here, Nishimura may be japanese and may be a jr. but wrestles a very grounded style similar to that of Dory Funk Jr. or Jack Brisco. This only throws Scorpio off for a bit, but he impresses by keeping up on the mat. Scorpio Splash (450 Splash) finishes for Too Cold at 8:45.
The USWA Tag Team Championships are on the line next, as the Dangerous Alliance duo of "Terrific" Terry Taylor & Greg "the Hammer" Valentine w/ Paul E. Dangerously make their first defense against the Spell Binder & Koko B. Ware. . With the crowd behind them the faces take the fight right to the new champions from the very get go. The heels are eventually able to isolate Koko for a good stretch. We build to a hot tag to Spell Binder. Once it happens the big man cleans house! He scores with a power slam on Taylor and looks to cover, but Hammer is there with his trademark elbowdrop! A second one connects and Taylor covers as Valentine cuts off Koko Ware. The Champs retain at 11:31.
Post Match- A fired up Koko Ware attacks the champs on his own after the bell sounds. Spell Binder tries to get involved but to no avail as the heels have the full advantage, and add to it by tossing Spell Binder to the outside. Just then an old returning face hits the ring to the shock of everyone involved.. it's.... it's...
"Beautiful" Bobby Eaton!
Eaton hits the ring and helps KOKO WARE CLEAN HOUSE! Trademark right hand takes out Taylor! Koko & Eaton come together and SCORE with a huge double dropkick sending Valentine out of the ring! Paul E. is pitching a fit, screaming " I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS!" in Eaton's direction! Eaton & Ware are reunited for the first time in 10 years and stand tall as the DA exits!
Singles action follows as the monster known as Doomsday is lead to the ring by Daryl Van Horne as he battles 1/2 of the Fantastics: Bobby Fulton. Bobby tries sticking and moving, and wisely goes after he knees of the near seven foot Doomsday, but in the end gets caught and planted with a side slam. Power Bomb finishes moments later giving Doomsday the victory in 5:12. Another dominant display from the monster here tonight at the Coliseum!
USWA Jr. Heavyweight Title is up for grabs just before intermission as Brian Christopher w/ "Tennessee Stud" Robert Fuller defend against new comer Al Snow. As you recall Snow survived the 10 Minute Stud Stable Invitational to earn this shot. Great match, as Al is a fantastic all around performer who plays a perfect face here against Christopher. Fuller gets involved throughout the bout, leading to some near falls. Finish see's Brian GET CAUGHT out of NOWHERE off the ropes with Snow's unique sit out spinebuster (AKA The Move Of the 90's) and WELP AL SNOW IS THE NEW USWA JR. HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION at 14:45!
Post Match- Christopher's slow to his feet, and when he does he pitches a freaking fit! Fuller does his best to calm him down as Snow celebrates in the aisle!
Intermission - During Intermission we're told to stay tuned to Championship Wrestling for MORE NEWS ON BATTLE CADE! The first of two main events will be announced, plus another huge match up!
We return from intermission with Marcus Alexander Bagwell going on one on one with Destruction of the Black Hearts. It's a bit competitive but the finish is never in question as Bagwell scores with his fisherman's suplex for the win at 4:10.
Grudge match follows as Tracy Smothers w/ Jeff Jarrett battles Wolfie D w/ the Gangstas. It's a wild brawl, but the numbers game is just far too much when all is said and done. Jarrett gets into a brawl with New Jack on the outside, the official gets involved which allows Mustafa to sneak in with the black jack and clobber Tracy Smothers from behind! Wolfie D picks up the cheap victory just seconds later at 9:01.
A big one follows as the USWA Heavyweight Title is on the line as Champion: Terry Funk defends against No.1 Contender "Universal Heartthrob" Austin Idol w/ Paul E Dangerously. . Can Idol complete the clean sweep and bring the USWA Heavyweight title to the Alliance? Or is Terry Funk gonna hold his ground here? Awesome match, filled with tons of drama. Paul E gets ejected after getting caught trying to slip the phone to Idol at around the 19 minute mark, to a huge reaction of course! Now Idol is on his own! Funk scores with his trademark DDT and covers two minutes or so later.. 1.... 2... IDOL GETS HIS FOOT IN THE ROPES JUST BEFORE 3! Funk can't believe it! He sets up for another but Idol is able to trip him out while in the ropes. Pin follows, with Austin getting his feet in the ropes... 1.... 2.... 3!! Funk kicks up just after 3! Idol has done it, Austin Idol is the new USWA heavyweight Champion at 22:35!
Post Match- Huge celebration in the aisle as Funk complains about the count. Paul E. and the DA are there to meet Idol! The Alliance now controls 4 of the 5 titles here in the USWA!
Main Event GRUDGE MATCH: A classic rivalry is renewed as Jerry "the King" Lawler battles
"HOT STUFF" EDDIE GILBERT & "WILD FIRE" TOMMY RICH!
Hit the ring from the crowd decked out in street clothes! What in the world is going on here! They attack Dundee, BUT THEN TURN THEIR ATTENTION TO LAWLER! Marcus Bagwell, Koko Ware, Bobby Eaton all hit the ring, as do the Dangerous Alliance! It's a huge brawl, that see's RICH & GILBERT DUCK OUT OF THE RING DURING IT! Rich & Gilbert laugh it up as the brawl continues in the ring! Official Result: NO CONTEST at 20:45.
