Larry Winters' RingMasters!
at the Original Sports Bar
Philadelphia, PA
7-25-1992
A small Wednesday night crowd for one of Philadelphia's "other" wrestling promotions but as is usual for this city, they do like their wrestling and as such are good for a lot of noise.
Bermuda shorts and a brightly colored Hawaiian shirt? Larry Winters introduces himself to the bar patrons with a little rundown of his "illustrious" career after thanking them all for coming out to the event. A few jokes turn to heckling, better to turn it over to the wrestlers ...
We have the stiff and tuxedo wearing Jay Sulli on the mic with the introductions for the first match. Lots of crowd noise questioning his manhood which is ignored as Stevie Richards and Jimmy Jannetty are introduced. A surprisingly quick paced and evenly fought match that finds both competitors able to gain control, hit big moves and very nearly pick up the win. Twenty minutes of action that had a little bit of everything ends in a draw.
These guys, coming off tough luck matches in Memphis for both the USWA and KAW, find themselves much farther north ... it's THE BAD CREW! They can't really be all that bad, can they to have been brought in? Their opponents? Well, they're announced as DJ Del Ray and Buck Q but to the more observant eye, it is noneother than Jimmy Del Ray and "some other guy" in Wigger gimmicks, complete with gold hubcaps. Del Ray gets on the mic and obviously as the heels in this one, heats the prodominantly white crowd up with racial slander, that is before the Bad Crew popped the pair just to shut them up. The Crew put a beating on their opponents though DJ Del Ray was able to get his team back into the match several times. For his part, the smaller Buck bumps like crazy and does absolutely nothing for his team. In the end, Buck takes a massive beating which allows for the Bad Crew to pick up a win ... if nothing else, a first for them and they celebrate as if they just won the lottery.
More singles action is next with the announcement of Todd Overbow and David Sammartino. A quick introduction and referee Bill Alfonso calls for the bell. A little mat work and technical knowhow from both and Sammartino is asking for some mic time. Easy to see who is the good guy here and who isn't as Sammartino tells the fans "the best thing about being here in Philly for this show is the end where I can hop in my car and head back to Pittsburgh, a true city of champions". After listening to the boobirds, Sammartino lets the fans in on a little secret as unknown to them AND lucky for them, they are getting a true match in "Wrestling Royalty" with Sammartino's pedigree and his opponent's daddy being Chief Jay Strongbow. Sammartino asks if Overbow was embarrassed by being Strongbow's kid and the reason why he wasn't carrying on the tradition? Overbow or Strongbow said he was just fine kicking Sammartino's ass by either name and decked him with a big right hand. It is back on and particularily stiff. While Sammartino does his best to keep Overbow on the mat, that just wasn't to be as Overbow breaks out his father's wardance that sends some of the older audience into a "Strongbow" chant. We have the dance, we have the tomahawk chops, we have it all MINUS one little thing ... the victory. That goes to David Sammartino who digs down into his tights and pulls out a chain when things look bad for him. BAM! POW! Overbow goes down like a ton of bricks and David Sammartino picks up the tainted win.
He quickly collects his chain and gets the hell out of Dodge. Todd Overbow, rubbing his chin, gets a standing "O" from the tough Philly crowd which he thanks before a short intermission. There is a little meet and greet with a few of the wrestlers as well as merch for sale. Larry Winters also mingles, mentions future shows in the area and even picks up a free beer for his troubles.
The action continues with Larry out once again, leading to the ring a guy in a wetsuit carrying a surfboard and a chick in a bikini. Winters says "The Sandman" is his best student and the Beach Babe ... well, she's in a skimpy bikini. Not much else to say there when an effeminate man in a suit leads a guy in pink with a matching feather boa out from the back. It is Hunter Q. Robbins III and "His Man", "Pretty in Pink" Chris Michaels. Hunter Q. vows that the beach bum will get a severe spanking! You can guess what the chanting is from the Philly Faithful that leads to the ear covering and complaints to the ref. All for naught as it only seems to fuel the fire.
We are finally underway and Michaels is a decent wrestler, taking things to the mat and tying up the Sandman in several positions with gay overtones. More howling from the fans as Michaels struts his stuff while Winters and the Beach Babe complain. After being beaten around the ring, the Sandman, with a helping hand from Winters and the surfboard is able to get back into the match. A near pinfall off an ugly "one-legged" drop kick. Some drunk-like staggering from the "beach bum" and an ending that sees the Beach Babe tackle Hunter Q. and Chris Michaels dropped face first into his manager's crotch before being rolled over for the pinfall.
The Beach Babe helps the Sandman to the back while Michaels has to carry Hunter Q. out, leaving just Larry Winters in the ring. Jay Sulli joins him and Winters thanks the fans for coming out, again promising more shows in the very near future. As he likes to give the fans a little bit of everything for their money, this next match is the icing on the cake and with that, he tells Jay Sulli to "RUN!"
Doesn't take long to see why ...
IT'S ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER!!!!!
Standard Abdullah fare. He tears Larry Winters' shirt to shreads before going to town with his trusty fork. Winters bleeds like a stuck pig as the two battle inside and outside of the ring. A legit tough guy, Winters busts Abdullah open by running him into the ringpost and taking away his fork. Wrestling? No. We get a nasty brawl with boatloads of blood as both bleed buckets.
They are allowed to fight outside the ring with the counts being suspended by the referee and fans clear out of the way as the two battle into the crowd. Moving back into the ring, Abdullah drops several Sudanese Meat Cleavers and is ready to take the pin but Winters is somehow able to roll out of the ring and make his retreat. The Butcher follows and the two disappear into the back. Several minutes go by with referee Joe Zanolle unsure of what to do. After running into the back briefly, Zanolle runs back out and calls for the bell, disqualifying both men.
Shortly after, a barking Abdullah hits the ring and chases Zanolle around the ring until Larry Winters is back out, this time carrying a chair. The two continue their brawl for several minutes before officials and wrestlers alike bringing an end to both the match and the show.
